Final Assignment

This project is a series of 5 splatter painted mirrors. Originally, I was motivated to take footage of myself splatter painting the mirrors while they faced each other so it could give off a "never ending" look. My video camera died in the process so I just decided to take pictures of the process. I then disassembled the frames from each mirror and stuck the corners of the mirrors into the grass (except for the circle of course). I was placing these objects in a very unusual place, a place you would never see them. With no specific color selection, paint was thrown on each mirror.
Time based media is interpreted through this project by each splatter of paint. The mirrors are equivalent to time maps. Every drop of paint represents a time in my process. In my photos, time is shown by the progression in the mirrors and how they build up with paint as time goes by.
This piece would be displayed outside in the grass to keep it in the environment it was in when it was created. The effect that the reflection of the grass gives is very appealing to my eye. Another way of installation could be just to place the mirrors on a wall and let the viewer be a part of the work. The photos would probably be in a collage together.

Appropriation Assignment

I just basically grabbed photos from YouTube of different animals fighting and amusing boxing knockouts. I dropped the opacity on parts of the animals fighting to show the boxing knockout. There was no true meaning to me blending these particular videos together other than the act that there is a fight occurring.

Final Project Proposal

What is the concept of your final project? I'm going to have mirrors face each other and I am going to record myself splatter painting the mirrors.

Why does this particular subject matter interest you? I like the way it looks when mirrors face each other. It gives a "never ending" look. I want to see if i can catch that look while paint and color gets added to one of the mirrors.

How do you plan to make this concept visible through time-based media? I am going to record the process and take pictures of the process. So, even if it goes wrong, people can see the process of fail lol.

What ideas do you have for finished presentation? I don't know quite yet. I'm trying to picture how it would look projected onto a mirror. That may be a good idea, possibly. . . If not a mirror, just projected onto the wall with the painted mirrors next to the projection.

Performance Art: Everybody Say HI!!!

This is my performance art project called "Everybody Say Hi!!!" The video is a compilation of people saying "hi" The clips throughout the video were taken mostly on campus and at my apartment. I decided to do this because you never think about the many different ways people say hi. Each person has a different tone and way they present the word. Also, it was interesting to see how people reacted to saying hi to the camera. it seemed as though people I didn't know were more willing to say hi to the camera and my friends would give me a hard time and tell me no. It was kind of awkward with people I did not know though because I would just walk up to them and ask them "Can you just say hi to my camera?" They usually responded "Uhhhh, sure." Over all, it was a very interesting project. Hope you guys like it :)

Blah Blah Proposal

With this next assignment, I had the idea of recording my friends sit next to people when they are on the phone or studying and have them sit next to the person with a big awkward smile on their face. I want to try and get the persons first initial reaction. Now I just have to find a way of doing this without people getting pissed at me lol. I may have to inform them after the fact so they don't think I'm a creeper.

Peace Of Nature

I created this piece by going in the field and the woods by my apartment. I did not have a tripod, so i just placed my camera in various places. I sat in the woods and recorded my sounds as well.  I chose the woods because it is a very calm place that I enjoy going to just relax and think. I arranged the photos in no specific order, I just wanted to give a calm relaxing feel.

Stop Motion Animation: Color Me Sexy

This is my stop motion video "Color Me Sexy". The video is about a plain white wooden mailbox that gets painted and turned sexy with colors, eyes and a beautiful flower thingy. The conflict of this video is the plain white wooden mailbox that needs color. The resolution is the mailbox being painted.

This video contains almost 900 photos and it took me about 12 hours to complete because i wanted to make sure when put together, the photos flowed good together. The title alone took me two hours. I drew out, cut and painted every letter for the title and the "By: Katie" paper took a while as well because i had to draw a line, then snap a picture, draw a line, snap a picture. It also took so long because every time i finished a color, i had to hurry and rinse the sponge i was using thoroughly so the colors didn't blend all ugly and stuff. Oh yea and i didn't mention that my cameras built in battery would die like every 20-25 minutes and i would have to take a break and let it charge, and my paint would have dried up by then.

If i could re-do this, i would have tried to do more with the mailbox, like make mail fly out of it or some crazy stuff. I would also have used a brush instead of a sponge, but I assume that would probably take two times longer.

Well, if you really read this, bless you. I hope you enjoy the video!

Stop Motion Storyboard

This is my storyboard for my stop motion video "Color Me Sexy" sorry for the terrible illustration. I promise the video will be much much better :)

George Rush : Darker With The Day :Interpret the work

I feel like the meaning of the work is to show that, though time changes and the day goes by, there are things that stay the same. On each wall, the extensions of the paintings on the walls, the branches, were the same with every piece. The black, white, and grey tones give off a depressing feel, but the art does not make me sad or depressed. Personally, I loved the exhibition. the series basically shows this table in front of this window throughout a whole day. The table and the window do not change but, through the day, the table gets used and the light coming through the window changes dramatically as it gets darker. the series gives a great visual description of the title "Darker with the Day". The changes in tones also show the change of time in the series. the movement of certain objects on the table and the shades coming through the window also show time.

Questions i would ask George Rush :

1. Were there any "mistakes" that you made that you just left and blended with the art?

2. What made you choose to paint the items you did on the table?

3. Why a table? Why not just a chair or a stool?

George Rush : Darker With The Day : Describe the work

The name of this exhibition was Darker with the Day by George Rush. This exhibition was created with, seems like acrylic paint on canvas. The work is displayed seeming as if the art gallery itself is a house. When you first enter the gallery, you see a window that seems dark, as if you are looking from the outside in. Once you go further in the gallery, it seems as if you are standing in the house and you are looking out the window with each painting. On the same wall, reverse from the darker window painting is a light window painting that shows the inside looking out kind of. Rush uses many different tones of black, white, and grey. The paintings use very sharp tonal values and blend nicely. He extended the art by painting what seem to be trees as the background of the painting. The work interacts well with the exhibition space because of the trees outside and the lighting as well. The subject of the work is for the viewer to experience the feeling of seeing through a window and watching the change in the tones as the day gets darker. Most people that have seen the exhibition do not like the work. They appreciate it, but the may not like it.

3.28.12 Time Map

This paper is a time map for 3.28.2012. this paper represents my boredom throughout the whole day along with interactions I made with friends during that day. I made everybody I came in contact with through the day draw a circle with their non-dominant hand, I painted the top and burned a couple spots. Come to find out, my boredom looks pretty awesome!
